Studio Loop designs With

Published: 18-Jan-2010

Japanese architects Studio Loop has completed a house in Gunma, Japan, which has been named With.

The house has two stories and is situated on the main road to the north and farmland to the east and west. The ground floors have private room and are created around the perimeter of a double-height communal space. From the upper level the surrounding fields and cherry trees, and includes access to a terrace is possible.

The house has been conceived as a hole in which the residents can shelter, as the climate of this town records the hottest temperature every year, and in winter, a strong gust wind from north and west blows into this area.

The house is a five meter double volume hole. Opposite to the hole at the center body of a house, private room zone – master bedroom and kid’s bedroom, and service room zone – bathroom, toilet, and storage, which are placed 600mm, and they surround the hole (LDK) and act as a buffer zone between outside to stabilize their day life from seasonal severe weather and traffic noise.

All the rooms in the house are inter-connected. The private rooms and service rooms are directly connected by doors. Air ventilation that is one of the important factors to this house can go through whole spaces. Library space, planting space, study space, and DJ space are located on the second floor are connected to the double volume LDK space with no wall, creating a unity of space and family activities.

The house also has a 2m by 5m fix high window placed on the upper level. With this, the residents easily find the view if the sky, yet have the safety of the hole. In order to take care of the budget, the exterior skin had to be of a single material. Black was the color chosen to be used on the exterior.

The concept of “nLDK” ; n (number of private rooms) L (living) D (dining) K (kitchen) has become a part of the Japanese society during the last 60 years due to the progress made in the of information technology. This concept is to describe the worth of the house. The provision of natural light at home is also taken care of. A terrace has been situated over the window.
