Russell Hill Road Residence by GH3 wins DWR Design Gallery Contest

Published: 30-Jul-2010

The Design Within Reach (DWR) has announced the Russell Hill Road Residence project in Toronto, Canada, designed by Canadian architectural practice GH3, as the winner of the 2010 DWR Design Gallery Contest.

Pat Hanson of GH3 and project partner Anthony Provenzano have redesigned and converted Russel Hill Road house - a 1970s Brutalist style residence in Canada - to a more flowing structure.

The house underwent a series of renovations from its previous owners, who converted large open spaces to a more cellular room design. Hanson and Provenzano have reversed this traditional approach to house design by reopening the ground floor. This has helped in creating an open loft-like space from front to back. The interior of the house has been stripped back to create a neutral shell punctuated by sculptural elements such as a curved stair and stone fireplace wall.

The architects have installed a fully glazed wall at the rear garden side of the house, which extended the sense of the outdoor space through to the interior. Kitchen working areas and storage spaces have been organized in a linear fashion along the exterior walls and are concealed behind full-height doors.

Neutral interior finishes dominate the space. Most surfaces are painted white and other surfaces that will be subjected to more wear and tear, such as, bathtubs and counters, are finished with custom-fabricated white Corian. To set a contrast to this all-white palette scheme, GH3 selected black-stained wood for all floor surfaces including the stairs. The white and dark contrast assists in extending and unifying the space.

The DWR Design Gallery Contest, organized by California-based furniture and accessory supplier DWR, was open to design professionals, design students, and design enthusiasts. The work must be original and should incorporate DWR products. The panel of judges rated each entry on a scale from 1-10 in each of the following criteria: innovation, honesty, timelessness and approachability.
