Published: 24-Nov-2010
‘L.A. Live’ - a $2.5 billion, four million square feet entertainment complex in Los Angeles, California, designed by global design practice RTKL, has won the 2010 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Global Awards for Excellence.
Developed by Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), L.A. Live is dubbed as the ‘Times Square of the West Coast’. The project implements sustainability, mass transit, and a vibrant streetscape. Master-planned and designed by RTKL L.A. Live has established a premier 24/7 ‘Live, Work, Play Community’ for the city of Los Angeles, transforming a previously underdeveloped industrial area into a vibrant urban district and economic engine.
The 35-acre development is conceived as a dynamic urbanist-inspired civic gathering place featuring a dense mix of uses that bring in over 600 live sports, concerts, major awards telecasts, family shows and corporate events annually.
L.A. LIVE sports, residential & entertainment district features Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE, a 7,100-seat live theatre; and Club Nokia, a 2,300 capacity live music venue; a 54-storey, 1001-room convention ‘headquarters’ destination featuring The Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott hotels and 224 luxury condominiums – The Residences at The Ritz Carlton; and Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE Stadium 14 movie theatre; ‘broadcast’ facilities for ESPN, along with entertainment, restaurant and office space.
In addition to the master plan, RTKL also provided urban design for specific spaces such as the Nokia Plaza, and architecture and environmental graphic design services for several buildings including the space that houses the ESPN Zone and Studios, and public spaces.
The project also recently received a 2010 Community Impact Award from the Los Angeles Business Council which recognized L.A. LIVE as the most successful economic development public/private partnership of the past 20 years.
The Urban Land Institute is a non-profit education and research institute supported by its members. Its mission is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide. ULI’s Awards for Excellence recognize developments that demonstrate industry leadership, innovation, contribution to the community, public/private partnership, environmental protection and enhancement, response to societal needs, and financial success.
RTKL has created some of the world’s most recognized and successful urban redevelopment plans including City Crossing, the flagship mixed-use development that heralded Shenzhen’s modernization; Leith Docks in Edinburgh, Scotland, the largest redevelopment project in the city’s history; the urban plan for the South Bund renewal in Shanghai, China; and design for two parcels totalling 400-acres of the King Abdullah Financial District in Saudi Arabia.
