Kier breaks ground on new retirement village in UK

Published: 26-Sep-2012

Kier Construction has broken ground on Charters Village, a new retirement village in East Grinstead, UK.

Sprawling over a 16 acres site in Felcourt Road that formerly house Bush Davies Dance School, the Charters Village will provide more than 80 individual properties for private ownership and a 60-bed care unit that will provide residential, nursing and specialist dementia care.

The residential units will be a mix of apartment buildings, cottages and chalet bungalows. The centrepiece of the development will be Charters Towers, an existing manor house on the site, which will undergo an extensive renovation and retrofitting. Charters Towers will house the communal facilities, including a restaurant, bar, function room and library.

The renovation of the Charters Tower will aim at retaining several original characters of the old building. Many features of the building echo the arts and crafts movement at the beginning of 20th century. The design of the Charter Tower will serve as the design outline for the entire development.

The scheme is being developed by Retirement Villages Group Limited and will be developed specifically for the people in the age group of 55 years and above. The project is valued at £39 million ($63.23 million).
