Harris County Housing Authority creates new eco senior housing

Published: 08-Sep-2011

Harris County Housing Authority has completed work on Cypress Estates, a new sustainable senior housing complex in Houston, Texas.

Designed by HCHA, the housing is dedicated to active adults aged 55 or above who have a fixed source of income. The housing exceeds LEED Platinum and Emerald Green standards through use of various green features such as installation of solar panels which produces up to 60% of its energy. Some of the one- and two-bedroom residential units of the building are energy positive. Also, all the units are fitted with Energy-Star eligible appliances like washers, dryers, dishwashers as well as refrigerators.

The facility features high-performance HVAC systems and insulation materials including Thermax and recycled cellulose which run low on energy consumption. Water wastage has been brought to a halt through installation of low-flow plumbing fixtures as well as a rainwater recycling system. The system helps channel rainfall from the roofs into storage tanks which deliver drip irrigation to meet native, drought-resistant landscaping needs.

The housing utilises various reclaimed materials. Its walking trails and sidewalk surfaces are formed of reused concrete. Use of Forest Stewardship Council-certified kitchen cabinetry and wood products across the entire facility adds to its sustainability. Other eco-friendly traits include buying materials within a 300-mile radius of the project site, reclaiming construction debris, and creation of bicycle storage facilities and electric car charging stations to boost the green initiative.

The complex has also been nominated as a finalist for the Multifamily Pillars of the Industry award.
