1970s kitchen remodeled by Wentworth, wins gold award
Published: 16-Dec-2009
Chevy Chase, MD-based Wentworth, Inc. was challenged with the task of remodeling a 1970s kitchen. The kitchen needed a change of its old linoleum floors, uneven construction, tiles and cabinetry.
The homeowners, according to Wentworth, wished the removal of the old kitchen all together, unveiling the space to the adjoining dining room and the garden area.
The designer’s first step was to replace the sliding glass doors with French ones that opened straight into the patio. The uneven construction was replaced by structures that made the walls and floors look square. The south wall of the kitchen was fitted with 12 inch deep, off white, full-height cabinets. Pantry cabinets with a countertop for laptops, mail cubbies and cell phone charging were also added.
All the kitchen appliances, along with the sink and a new casement window, were accommodated on the north wall. The rear door was replaced in order to emphasis the garden view. The cherry top complemented the wood flooring and the natural stone perimeter countertops. Eclectic pendant lights hang on the custom coffered-beam ceiling, which puts emphasis on the height.
The renovation was completed within the client’s budget of $160,000: winning the Master Design gold award. The new kitchen sports a well, airy and an almost European feel.
